Subaru continues to lead in crash safety with Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca vehicles
Nobody thinks they’re going to have a fender-bender today, but if you have to have one, you’d best have it in a Subaru, say experts. Each of the company’s models - the 2013MY Subaru Forester, Impreza, XV Crosstrek, Legacy, BRZ Subaru Outback, and Tribeca vehicles have received the 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award (TSP.)
The 2013 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback are also the first Subaru vehicles to have been tested for the Institute’s 2013 “TSP+” award which requires “good” ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 IIHS evaluations. Anything less than good is a fail. Both vehicles are now rated as TSP+.
"The strong ratings of our products in IIHS testing supports Subaru’s belief in safety," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. "Having 100% of our models listed as IIHS Top Safety Picks and now the Legacy and Outback models tested to TSP+ status demonstrates that."
It’s not a fluke, either – Subaru is the sole manufacturer to win IIHS Top Safety Pick for each model it builds for four years in a row.
Check out this fantastic review by a new Subaru owner!
"Thank you, Ahmad and team at Livermore Subaru!! We absolutely LOVE our 2013 Outback Limited, and will continue to recommend this dealership over any others that might be in our local area." -- Rachel S.

Subaru performs strongly in rigorous new IIHS crash test
Continuing its strong performance in crash testing, the 2013MY Subaru Forester, Subaru Impreza, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Subaru Legacy, Subaru BRZ Subaru Outback, and Subaru Tribeca vehicles have received the 2013 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award (TSP).
Furthermore, the 2013 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback are the first Subaru vehicles to have been tested for the Institute’s 2013 “TSP+” award which requires good ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 IIHS evaluations, with no less than acceptable in any test. Both vehicles are now rated as TSP+. "The strong ratings of our products in IIHS testing supports Subaru’s belief in safety" said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. "Having 100% of our models listed as IIHS Top Safety Picks and now the Legacy and Outback models tested to TSP+ status demonstrates that." The TOP SAFETY PICK recognizes vehicles that in IIHS testing do the best job of protecting people in moderate overlap front, side, rear, and rollover crashes based on 'good' ratings in each category. The IIHS ranks in terms of Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor, with 'good' as the top rank possible in Institute tests. Winners also must have electronic stability control. "For four consecutive years, Subaru is the only automotive manufacturer with the distinction of earning IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK awards for every model it builds," said Institute president Adrian Lund. "Subaru deserves praise for making safety a top priority." About IIHSThe Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of a moderate overlap frontal and small overlap crash test. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test. Building on its long-running vehicle ratings program for consumer information, IIHS introduced the small overlap test in 2012 to further improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Most automakers design their vehicles for good performance in the IIHS moderate overlap frontal test and the federal government’s full-width frontal test, but many haven’t addressed the problem of small overlap crashes. In a 2009 IIHS study of vehicles with good ratings for frontal crash protection, small overlap crashes accounted for nearly a quarter of the frontal crashes involving serious or fatal injury to front seat occupants. The small overlap test is a demanding crash that replicates what happens when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole. In the test, 25 percent of a car’s front end on the driver side strikes a 5-foot-tall rigid barrier at 40 mph. Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2-instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a small (5th percentile) woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact. Rear crash protection is rated according to a two-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry -- the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average size man. Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people. In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a constant speed. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. A marginal rating value is 2.5. Anything lower than that is rated poor.

SUBARU BRZ ENGINE EARNS WARD’S “10 BEST ENGINES” RECOGNITION
Subaru of America, Inc. has earned a place on the 19th annual Ward’s 10 Best Engines list. The 2013 Subaru BRZ’s 2.0 4-cyl. Boxer engine makes its debut on the list. The all-new BRZ sports car also boasts an impressive 34 mpg highway fuel economy.
"The BRZ engine delivers luscious mid-range torque, loves to rev hard and sounds tremendous, while being sedate at idle. And it's efficient -- we hammered the BRZ and still managed nearly 29 mpg,” said Tom Murphy, executive editor at Ward’s. “It's hard to do a small naturally aspirated engine that makes your palms sweat, but the BRZ succeeds. And it can be had for about $25,000, well equipped." Ten WardsAuto editors chose the winners by evaluating 40 new or significantly upgraded engines in their routine daily commutes around metro Detroit between October and early December. Editors scored each engine based on power, technology, observed fuel economy, relative competitiveness and noise, vibration harshness characteristics. The Subaru Outback 2.5L engine was also among the 40 engine nominees. According to Ward’s, “the 2.0L 4-cyl. boxer engine from Fuji Heavy Industries in the Subaru BRZ coupe proves forced induction is not essential for engines to achieve today’s high specific outputs.”Courtesy of Subaru

Here's a closer look at the 2013 Subaru Forester
If you are looking for a multipurpose and fuel efficient vehicle which is the perfect blend of practicality and style, then it doesn’t get better than the 2013 Subaru Forester which offers a symmetrical all-wheel drive with Vehicle Dynamics Control and many more power packed features.
2013 Subaru Forester Review: Specs and Features
Before proceeding to the detailed 2013 Subaru Forester Review, let’s look at some of the highlighting features of this car at a glance.
■HID headlights
■Rear lift gate that gives access to a large cargo and rear hatch area.
■68 cubic feet of underfloor cargo storage capacity.
■Panoramic glass sunroof atop
■5 passenger seating
■Heated front seats
■Climate control
■Leather upholstered seats
■Blue tooth connectivity
■Voice-Control GPS Navigation system
■Front and rear air bags with front side-impact airbags as well.
■Backup camera in some trims
■Four wheel anti-lock disc brakes
Providing good acceleration with good traction, the 2013 Subaru Forester definitely takes the lead from its predecessor. The 5-speed manual is proving to be a better option than the 4-speed automatic. 2013 Subaru Forester is not awe-inspiringly stylish but its clear lines definitely help in its power and acceleration and the straight corners add to the space inside.
The 2013 Subaru Forester combines ultimate comfort of ride and seating with high-end utility and fuel efficiency making it one of the best compact crossovers on the road right now. Fuel efficiency has become one of the greatest concerns of the consumers and this is one of the hottest features of the 2013 Subaru Forester.
Because of its high ground clearance, rear camera, six airbags, tire-pressure monitoring system and anti-lock brakes, we can safely say that it takes the top notch in safety features as well.Courtesy of carsreview.us

SUBARU BRZ NAMED A 10BEST CAR BY CAR AND DRIVER MAGAZINE
Subaru of America, Inc. announced that the all-new 2013 BRZ sports car has earned a spot on Car and Driver’s 10Best list. The rear-wheel drive Subaru BRZ delivers pinpoint handling precision and an unmatched driving experience for sports car enthusiasts of all skill levels.
“The Subaru BRZ is a worthy addition to the 10Best list,” said Eddie Alterman, Editor-in-Chief, Car and Driver. "It has a low center of gravity, a perfectly balanced chassis, and not much else to get in the way of all that. This is a driver's car pure and simple; a powerful counterbalance to the forces of automotive bloat." Subaru developed the rear-wheel drive BRZ with the fundamentals of sports car design in mind: low vehicle weight, an ultra-low center of gravity and precision steering. Utilizing Subaru’s new naturally aspirated 200 horsepower horizontally opposed (BOXER) engine design, the BRZ is a sports car that does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality. With 2+2 seating and a folding rear seat, there is sufficient cargo space to transport four race tires and tools to track days. Combined with the Subaru brand's renowned safety and quality, the BRZ is a sports car with practicality as well as performance. According to Car and Driver, “Electrically assisted steering that actually communicates and a chassis balance that ebbs and flows between understeer and oversteer with brake or throttle applications are hallmarks of [the Subaru BRZ] personality.” Courtesy of SubaruMonday, December 10, 2012

Subaru Wins L.A. Auto Show Design Challenge
In the future, highway patrol vehicles are likely to look a lot different from the police cruisers of today. This year’s Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge asked automakers to sketch what the ideal highway patrol vehicle of 2025 might look like, and top honors go to Subaru for its SHARC design.
Short for “Subaru Highway Automated Response Concept,” Subaru Global Design’s entry may look a bit insubstantial for police work, but its wheels can rotate ninety-degrees downward, forming propeller blades. That gives the SHARC the ability to fly, negating any worries about traffic or terrain.
It’s designed for autonomous use and fueled by renewable energy, which means it meets the criteria for Hawaii’s “Ultra-Green” carbon-neutral environmental mandates, too.
Still, the innovative concept was up against some serious competition from the likes of BMW’s Designworks USA, General Motors Advanced Design California, Honda’s R&D design studios from both Los Angeles and Tokyo, and Mercedes-Benz R&D North America’s Advanced Design Center California.
The SHARC won out, however, as it “captured the vision of the Design Challenge theme by combining functionality and problem-solving technology around a dynamic and plausible story,” in the words of Chuck Pelly from Design LA.
The concept may offer police departments of the future greater patrol flexibility, but we can’t imagine that many police unions will be happy about its staff-reducing fully-autonomous design.

Subaru introduces all-new 2014 Forester Crossover SUV at Los Angeles Auto Show.
Subaru of America, Inc. today introduced the all-new 2014 Forester, the fourth generation of its popular all-wheel drive crossover SUV, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2014 Forester debuts a bolder exterior design and roomier interior, along with improved performance and higher fuel economy across the line. The 2014 Forester arrives in Subaru dealerships next spring.
The five-passenger 2014 Subaru Forester is a total re-design of the acclaimed crossover SUV that’s built a strong reputation for safety, performance, dependability and versatility. With virtually the same footprint as the outgoing model, the 2014 Forester offers expanded room, comfort and utility. A new 250-horsepower 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged BOXER engine leads the line, which will also include models powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter naturally aspirated BOXER engine. As with all previous Forester models, the 2014 version comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a distinction from competitive models that come with front-wheel drive as standard and offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option. The 2014 Forester will jump to the head of its segment in all-wheel drive fuel economy, with the 2.5i models with the CVT achieving manufacturer-estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg city / 32 mpg highway / 27 mpg combined. The 2014 Forester combines evolutionary design themes with sharply defined new details in an all-new body. The 2.0XT models feature an exclusive aggressive looking sport design front bumper along with a one-piece mesh style grille and chrome-rimmed fog light bezels. The 2014 Forester is built on a new platform featuring a 0.9-inch longer wheelbase (now 103.9 inches). Vehicle length is increased by just 1.4-inch, and width by 0.6-in., yet thanks to Subaru’s mastery of efficient vehicle packaging, the 2014 Forester offers notable gains in roominess, particularly in the rear seat, where legroom is now 41.7 inches. Higher seat hip points, a lower center tunnel and shorter front console also provide greater legroom and comfort for the center rear seat passenger. Maximum rear cargo area room with the 60/40 split rear seatbacks lowered is now 74.7 cu. ft., which is among the best in class. The 2014 Forester 2.5i model will be available in base, Premium, Limited and top-line Touring versions. The turbocharged Forester 2.0XT will be offered in the Premium and Touring versions. The 2.5i models offer a choice between a new 6-speed manual transmission and the Subaru Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is also used in the Subaru Impreza®, Legacy® and Outback® models. A high-torque version of the CVT is standard in the Forester 2.0XT models, where it features 6-speed and 8-speed manual shift modes with steering wheel paddle switches. High-line 2014 Forester models equipped with the CVT also feature new X-Mode control for the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Hill Descent Control to provide extra control in certain driving conditions. New safety features for all 2014 Forester models include anti-whiplash front seats, a driver’s knee airbag, Brake Override and an impact-sensing fuel system cutoff. For all 2014 Forester models, a new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system contributes to fuel efficiency and also provides excellent feedback to the driver. In addition to the turbo engine, the 2.0XT models deliver sharper handling responses from a sport-tuned suspension with 18-inch wheels, and the 2.0XT also features larger brakes than the 2.5i models, with ventilated front and rear rotors. The Forester’s four-wheel independent suspension system delivers agile handling and a highly compliant ride quality. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for many crossovers and SUVs. Yet, the Forester maintains a comfortably easy and low step-in, enhanced in the 2014 model by wider-opening rear doors and by side sills that are 2 inches lower than before. The 2014 Forester debuts new amenities and conveniences, along with more upscale luxury features on high-line models. All but the base 2.5i model come with a standard rear vision camera and color multi-function display. New available features include a power rear liftgate with automatic close, Keyless Access and Start and the EyeSight driver assist system. Using a stereo camera system developed by Subaru, rather than radar, EyeSight integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. The available touch-screen navigation system offers smartphone integration with Aha® smartphone integration features. The top-line Touring models come standard with the navigation system plus an eight-speaker, 440-watt harman/kardon® audio system.Courtesy of Subaru Media

Subaru of America Sells Six Millionth Vehicle
Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it has sold its six millionth vehicle in the United States. The vehicle, a 2013 XV Crosstrek, was sold at Subaru of Georgetown in Georgetown, Texas.
“Subaru has a rich heritage in the U.S. and we are excited to celebrate the six million vehicle milestone,” said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Not only have we sold six million vehicles in the U.S., but we are selling them at a faster rate than ever. It took us 16 years to reach our first million, but at our current sales rate we will hit our next million in under three years.” Subaru of America is the only automaker to have five consecutive years of sales increases during 2008-2012. The company has also shattered its previous annual sales records for the past four years. Subaru broke its 2011 annual sales record in October 2012, with more than two months remaining in the year. “From the Subaru Brat of the 1970’s to the current Impreza – the most fuel efficient all wheel drive car in America, we have enjoyed more than four decades of sales to loyal and enthusiastic American buyers,” said Doll. “We are also proud that 96 percent of Subaru built in the last ten years are still on the road today. That speaks to the longevity of Subaru vehicles.”

Subaru Reveals New Forester
The covers have come off the new 2014 Subaru Forester, a completely redesigned and more fuel-efficient version of the popular crossover that will go on sale shortly after its debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of this month. In addition to being more fuel-efficient, the 2014 Forester also offers more interior space while maintaining the outgoing model’s overall exterior dimensions, according to Subaru. A new turbo model has also been added. The fourth-generation Forester is the latest model developed under Subaru’s Motion-V strategy, which is aimed at reducing the automaker’s fuel consumption and emissions by 30 percent by the middle of the decade, and it joins such previous newcomers as the BRZ sports coupe and Outback Sport-replacing XV Crosstrek. Two engine options will be offered. The standard model gets the previous 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder rated at 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The new turbo model gets a direct-injected and turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The turbo unit is based on the boxer engine found in the BRZ sports car, although it gets Subaru’s own direct-injection technology rather than the Toyota system found in the BRZ. It’s possible that a version of this new turbo engine will appear in the BRZ STI model. No fuel economy numbers have been given, but Subaru states they will be higher across the line, thanks in part to new transmissions that include a six-speed manual and continuously variable automatic. Other items, either standard of available, include 17- and 18-inch wheels, ample seating for five, a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, symmetrical all-wheel drive, a rear-view camera, and Harmon/Kardon premium sound.

2013 Subaru BRZ - Automobile of the Year Testing
The 2013 Subaru BRZ's late fall introduction last year meant it narrowly missed being a part of our 2012 Automobile of the Year testing, yet we knew a car of this pedigree warranted a year-long examination even before we'd had a chance to hand it any awards. When it came time for our 2013 AOY testing, we'd already spent four months with our long-term car and the BRZ was a staff favorite heading into the weeklong event. While it's unusual to use a Four Seasons car for AOY evaluation, it's not easy finding an idle BRZ or Scion FR-S and so our Subaru made the trip to South Haven, Michigan, for a week in early October.
To give the BRZ a fair shot at the title, we wanted the car running in top shape, so we took it to the dealer for a new set of brake pads with just 6510 miles on the odometer. We were disappointed to see the brakes wear so quickly, but we've also spent an inordinate amount of time on the track with our BRZ. As soon as we took delivery of the car, road test editor Chris Nelson snuck off to GingerMan Raceway for a day. The next weekend, he gave SCCA ProSolo autocross a try. Then we brought the car back to GingerMan for an evening of lapping while the sticky Dunlop Star Specs were still mounted. If we hadn't kept the car stock for AOY testing, we certainly would have upgraded the pads.
"I am now absolutely certain I want to buy and own a Subaru BRZ (or a Scion FR-S; I'm not picky). Having driven the car on the track at GingerMan and then halfway across the state, I am in awe at just how well-rounded this car is. Not only was it an absolute riot on the track -- almost as much fun as the Boxster--it also proved surprisingly quiet and comfortable on a 250-plus-mile trip back home. I averaged 29 mpg between South Haven and Ann Arbor, and that included a stopover to visit a friend in downtown Grand Rapids." - Jake Holmes, associate Web editor
"I have no qualms in saying this was the best driver's car we brought to AOY testing. Heck, it may even be the best driver's car on the market. How so? It's communicative, engaging, and rewarding to drive right. That can also be said of the Boxster S, 911 Carrera S, and RS5 we also had at hand, but the Subaru excels where the others don't. The BRZ challenges you to learn -- to perfect driving lines, power application, shift points, brake points -- in order to extract the car's full potential." - Evan McCausland, associate Web editor
"The engine is somewhat gritty sounding but I cannot understand people who contend that this car needs more power. The BRZ is definitely a fun track tool. What a difference coming out of the (quite good) Focus ST and into a rear-wheel-drive car. It's a whole different experience, and one that's quite rare at this price point." - Joe Lorio, senior editor
"As McCausland points out, the joy in driving the BRZ is to wring every bit of power and performance out of the relatively simple yet very athletic chassis and engine. And the BRZ definitely does enjoy being wrung out, whether on a racetrack or a serpentine stretch of road." - Joe DeMatio, deputy editor
We're obviously quite smitten with the Subaru BRZ on a road course. But it's important to remember Automobile of the Year is about a whole lot more than how a car behaves at the limit. Be sure to check back on November 1 to find out if the BRZ managed to bring home our most prestigious trophy. Win or lose, we look forward to eight more months of adventure in this sporty coupe.

2013 Subaru Outback delivers affordable fun and performance
For 2013, Subaru of America has raised the bar even further giving the Outback revised front styling, a new more efficient and powerful engine, a new second generation Lineartronic CVT transmission and a leading edge driver assist system called EyeSight that provides the driver pre-collision braking that is capable of detecting and reacting to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic threats plus lane departure and sway warning along with adaptive cruise control.
We just completed a week with a brand new Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in Venetian Red Pearl with a base MSRP of $29,095 and the Moonroof + Navigation + Eyesight System package for $3,940. With delivery, our 2013 Subaru Outback price was $33,830.
At first glance, we thought this Outback 2.5i Limited was very well equipped. After reviewing the vehicle and its standard plus optional equipment included, we were very much surprised at the value Subaru has included in the price.
After driving this new Outback for around 300 miles around Central Texas, we understand readily the loyalty of Subaru Outback owners through the years and why sales for the Outback were up 39% over 2011 in September with the roll out of the 2013 model with the new EyeSight system.
This very capable 5-passenger crossover utility (CUV) wagon was equipped with the 2.5 liter DOHC 4-cylinder Boxer engine delivering 173 horsepower with 174 lb.-ft. of torque. It was equipped with the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) with a 6-speed manual mode that included steering wheel paddle shifters. The EPA rating for this 4-cylinder is 24/30 mpg city/highway.
The 3.6R Limited model (MSRP $32,095) is equipped with a DOHC 6-cylinder Boxer engine that delivers 256 horsepower delivering 256 horsepower with 247 lb.-ft. of torque. This version is equipped with a standard 5-speed electronic control automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The bigger 6-cylinder EPA rating is 18/25 mpg city/highway.
From our test drive, the performance of the Outback 2.5i Limited exceeded our expectations even with the smaller power plant. Mated to the CVT transmission, this Outback Limited got us easily everywhere we wanted and needed to go without hesitation and for less money at the pump.
This Subaru Outback is smart-sized compared to other 2-row crossover vehicles, featuring a mid-size interior in an easy-to-maneuver and off-road-capable wagon. The Outback provides the crisp car-like handling with the versatility of an SUV. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for many large SUVs and crossovers while maintaining a low step-in height.
Seating is wide and comfortable with more than adequate cockpit space and lots of leg room between the front and second row seating even with the front seats all the way back. Total passenger volume of 105.4 cu. ft. and maximum cargo capacity of 71.3 cu. ft. (with the standard 60/40 split rear seat backs folded) was easily comparable to that of larger, heavier vehicles. The Outback also features a rear cargo area that is deeper and wider than in many SUVs.
The new more comfortable seats were perforated leather trimmed in our Outback and coupled with a new light matte wood grain trim, gave it a sophisticated appearance.
The Outback Limited new Special Appearance Package option provides a new Keyless Access & Start system along with a two-position memory system for the already-standard 10-way power driver’s seat. With the Keyless Access & Start system, the driver, while carrying the remote control in a pocket or purse, can unlock the car by touching the door handle button. The rear gate also has an unlock touch sensor.
Also in the Limited, a new electro-luminescent instrument cluster integrates the 3.5-in. color screen for the multi-information display, which also shows EyeSight functions. Rear A/C outlets have also been added as standard to Limited models, to make the standard 60/40 split-reclining rear seats an even more hospitable place to be.
The standard audio system in the Outback 2.5i models is upgraded for 2013 to include Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and audio streaming, iPod® control capability and a USB port. The system continues with an AM/FM stereo, single disc CD player, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), 3.5mm aux. input jack and 4 speakers.
Our top-level Outback Limited model included the optional new navigation system with premium audio. In addition to all of the features in the harman/kardon Premium Audio Package including a 440-watt high-performance audio amplifier and nine harman/kardon premium speakers with subwoofer. This option includes: touch-screen GPS navigation system with 7.0-inch LCD display; voice activated controls and navigation; XM NavTraffic; Rear Vision Camera, and an SD card slot for convenient navigation map updates.
On the roof, our 2013 Subaru Outback included the new adjustable standard factory-installed foldable roof crossbars roof rack design that allows the rear crossbar to be moved rearward to carry longer items. The distance between the front and rear bars can now be increased from the standard 29.9 inches up to 39.7 inches. This enhancement, made as a direct result of Outback owner feedback, allows greater ease in carrying longer items like kayaks and other outdoor gear on the already easy-to-use roof rack system.
Despite being very off road and cross country capable, this Subaru Outback rides very comfortably and quietly due to numerous enhancements to the suspension system and sound deadening efforts for 2013. The 2.5i Limited rides on 17 inch alloy wheels adding to the stability of the vehicle.
We were very pleasantly surprised to find the New EyeSight Driver-Assist System included in the delivered price for this Outback 2.5i Limited.
The EyeSight driver-assist system, integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. The Subaru EyeSight system uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems. The system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items.
Below relative speeds of approximately 19 mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians or objects in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop.
At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately, to help mitigate collision damage.
The Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane.
Intended for freeway use, Eyesight’s Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fully brake the vehicle to a stop if the system “locks on” to a vehicle ahead. As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy “stop and go” freeway traffic by maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when the vehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn't react within several seconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damage by cutting the throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedal continues to be pushed.

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek compact for adventure
Subaru has achieved remarkable success in North America over the past two decades by creating variations of its two basic models, the compact Impreza hatchback and the pricier Legacy sedan.
At the heart of all its models are the Boxer 4-cylinder engine and the all-wheel-drive system that defines the brand.
Impreza, introduced in 1992, evolved into the Outback wagon in 1994 and the Forester crossover utility vehicle in 1997. Now, Subaru has a newer version of the Impreza called the XV Crosstrek, a high-riding compact that was originally designed for Europe but caught the eye of American dealers. Subaru calls Crosstrek the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover utility in America, delivering 33 miles per gallon on the highway.
Brochure highlights include standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, high ground clearance, 17-inch alloy wheels and abundant room for passengers and cargo.
Subaru is bringing two versions of the XV Crosstrek to dealers this fall. The Premium trim has a high level of standard features and the Limited adds more luxury and technology. XV Crosstreks are powered by a 148-horsepower 2-liter boxer engine, so-called because its cylinders are horizontally opposed, making it flat like a box. Buyers can opt for five-speed manual transmission or Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.
The review car came with automatic transmission, which shifted without identifiable shift points. However, the engine was a bit noisy on hard acceleration from a dead stop.
The automatic transmission features a six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. That allows the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. The transmission also allows "second gear" starts to limit wheel spin on slippery surfaces.
Fuel economy figures of 25 city, 33 highway and 28 combined mpg makes Crosstrek among the most fuel-efficient crossovers on the market. All-wheel-drive adds safety to a vehicle but costs a mile or two per gallon in fuel efficiency. Buyers looking for both AWD and fuel efficiency will likely be attracted to the Crosstrek. Think Vermont.
The Crosstrek is an attractive vehicle that will appeal to those who project sporty, outdoor personalities. Black side and wheel-arch cladding, rocker spoiler and roof rails provide contrast to the body color. The higher ride height, body-color roof spoiler and eye-catching 17-inch wheels enhance the car's appeal. Front and rear bumpers and the front grille are unique to the Subaru XV Crosstrek, and dark-tint privacy glass is standard.
Crosstrek's structure features high-strength suspension components that enhance agility, while liquid engine mounts help reduce vibration. The double-wishbone rear suspension features pillow ball bushings for to improve ride comfort, straight-line stability, handling agility and vehicle response.
Both the manual and automatic transmissions include the Subaru Incline Start Assist feature, which will briefly hold the vehicle while the driver pulls away from a stop on a hill.
A standard ECO gauge helps the driver to operate the vehicle as economically as possible. The interior of the Crosstrek feels much roomier than you might guess from the outside. A 103.7-inch wheelbase yields rear seat legroom of 35.4 inches, which is close to the roominess of some midsize cars. With the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded, haulers gain a completely flat load floor with up to 51.9 cubic feet of carrying space. The cargo area has a cover that can be pulled into place or removed, along with a removable waterproof cargo tray, tie-down hooks and grocery bag hooks.
Crosstrek's front seats feature tilt-adjustable head restraints. Large door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and maps. Several compartments around the center console are available for cell phones, MP3 players, sunglasses or other items.

2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0L Sport Limited Long-Term
Fresh off the Subie's firewalk through the Arizona desert for baseball's spring training, I took the Sage Green hatchback on a long weekend trip north to the Eastern Sierra mountains of California and the resort town of Mammoth Lakes. Driving up with me were two skiers eager to hit the slopes. With almost no ski experience I was there to breathe the mountain air, drink beer, and watch Kentucky dismantle Louisville in the Final Four. Our trip really got started when we stopped for lunch at In-N-Out Burger in Lancaster as we made our way north to join U.S. 395 in Indian Wells, where we stopped for "supplies" at Indian Wells Brewery Co.
The saying "The journey is more important than the destination" certainly applies to the approximately 160-mile run between Indian Wells and Mammoth Lakes on U.S. 395, aka the Three Flags Highway because it stretches from Mexico to Canada. The road, situated in the Owens Valley, is a chasm with the Eastern Sierra Mountains to the west and the smaller Inyo Mountains to the east. Westward is Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. To the east lies Death Valley. The landscape is beautiful, but also stark and desolate. The Impreza easily hauled its three passengers and our load of supplies while maintaining an unofficial mid-30 m.p.g. range. No struggles to make the climbs or keep up the speed. There were some problems being able to hear the passenger in the back seat, but it wasn't wind-tunnel-level noise and was remedied by the person speaking up, but not yelling.
Four major cities along the route are Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, and Bishop. Lone Pine is home to the stunning Alabama Hills and the portal to hike Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48. Between Lone Pine and Independence, the haunting sight of a reconstructed watchtower on the site of the Manazanar War Relocation Center is powerful reminder of our nation's ignorance and intolerance. The site housed Japanese Americans during World War II and now is maintained and operated by the National Park Service. www.nps.gov/manz/index.htm. Bishop is home to Erick Schat's Bakkery and some of the best butter cookies I've ever had. We stopped here as well for more "supplies."
Sadly, the Subaru was already parked, so I wasn't able to give its all-wheel-drive a snow test. I sensed disappointment in its car-brain, but we'll get 'em next time. While my friends skied, I drank some beer and Inhaled mountain air while watching the Wildcats crush the Cardinals in a lodge bar where a 10-year old kid refused to give me a high-five. Little jerk. It was a weekend well spent.
Diverging plans meant I had a solo drive home. With the sun melting away into the mountains, the trip was one of the easiest and most beautiful long-distance drives of my life. The comfortable and supportive seats allow me to drive the long distance without my back getting stiff and me having to stop for a stretch. Filling up near Mammoth gave me all the fuel I needed to get home, but I did need to make one stop in Bishop for a re-supply of cookies that I didn't have to share with anyone. Friends are great and all, but cookies are better.

Subaru Legacy X marks its spot
Drove a luxury sedan through mud, over rutted tracks and up a very big hill the other day. Didn't touch tarmac once. Didn't stop until I reached the top.
If you're thinking that not many people would want a fully-equipped four-door with off-road capability, you're probably right.
Subaru NZ might agree: it expects to sell only 20 of its new flagship sedan, the Legacy X, each year.
But as company boss Wally Dumper told media at the model's launch: "There's an opportunity there."
We Kiwis love wagons, but in some markets buyers of pseudo-luxury models still feel a load-carrier lacks the dignity and premium look of a conventional three-box sedan.
That thinking led Subaru to create the Legacy X, which is aimed mainly at the American market.
This $67,990 machine comes only with the 3.6-litre boxer-six petrol engine and is fitted with every piece of equipment available from the Japanese maker: leather upholstery, powered/heated front seats, satellite navigation, automatic lights/wipers, windscreen wiper de-icer, a thumping McIntosh 10-speaker sound system and the new, high-tech EyeSight active safety system.
Naturally, the Legacy X is four-wheel drive.
But it also has a 50mm raised ride height and 200mm ground clearance, meaning it can go pretty much anywhere an Outback can.
The model will be of interest to rural businesspeople who want to maintain a premium image, executives with country-based clients and even farmers who might otherwise buy a top-line Australian sedan.
Aside from the Legacy X's practical nature, Dumper also sees it as a "Euro fighter" - an upmarket, all-wheel drive car for buyers who want something a little bit different.
Different it is, although the Legacy X doesn't give too much away in terms of styling.
The raised ride height exacerbates its already "perched" look, but it's balanced by the wider track and flared guards from the Outback - in body colour, of course.
The X heads a revised Legacy/Outback model range.
The 2.5-litre Outbacks have a new boxer engine and Lineartronic (continuously variable) transmission that have further improved fuel economy to 8 litres per 100km.
Despite the major powertrain upgrade, exterior changes are minor.
The 2013 Outback is most easily identified by a new grille shape, although it has also gained an extra 13mm ground clearance - at 213mm, it rides just slightly higher than the Legacy X.

Presdidential cars: Ronald Reagan, Subaru Brat
How many American presidents actually test-drove cars? Reagan is famously known as an actor-turned-politician, but in the late 1970s he secretly drove a Subaru Brat test car around his California ranch and sent progress reports to the automaker. It had to be hush-hush because political sentiment of the day toward Japanese carmakers was confrontational to say the least.

Round of 2012 Global RallyCross Championship
Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team driver Sverre Isachsen powered his 2012 Subaru WRX STI to a season best third Overall at this past weekend’s Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team celebrated the result as proof that recent testing and development have significantly increased the performance and potential of the team’s trio of nearly 600hp Subaru WRX STI Rallycross cars. Isachsen’s teammate, rallycross rookie Bucky Lasek, steered clear of trouble to achieve a career best finish of eighth overall. Team driver Dave Mirra didn’t have lady luck on his side in Vegas, as he collided heavily into the back of a competitor who had suddenly slowed in Mirra’s path due to a mechanical issue . The collision forced Mirra to retire from the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) heat with significant front end damage to his Subaru.
Isachsen qualified sixth overall in one of the most closely contested GRC rounds this year, where the top eight qualifiers were separated by under a half second, with Isachsen just 0.3 seconds off the pole. All three Subaru PUMA RallyCross team cars went head-to-head together with two other competitors in the five-car heat race. Isachsen held an early lead in the heat against his teammates and defending GRC champion Tanner Foust, only to have Foust narrowly pass him coming off the joker lap late in the race. With a second place finish in the heat Isachsen moved straight on to the Final. Lasek would move on to the Final later in the evening with a fourth place finish in the LCQ while Mirra’s collision with a slowing competitor’s car forced him to retire from the LCQ. Isachsen steered clear of trouble around the chaotic first turn in the ten-car Final and made a late race pass to reach third Overall. “Our goal all season has been to develop the car and reach the podium. This feels so good,” exclaimed Isachsen at the finish celebration. “My Subaru was good all weekend, and my driving too. This is a big confidence boost for the team and now I’m looking forward to the next race outside the Las Vegas Convention Center during the SEMA Show.”Isachsen’s teammate, skate legend Bucky Lasek was equally thrilled with his own result as he achieved his best finish yet in his burgeoning Rallycross career. Lasek for the first time this season advanced to the Final where he finished eighth overall. “This event was another great leap forward in my rookie year. Getting more seat time in my #81 STI is the key and it has helped me catch up to the development of these cars. I’m now much more comfortable behind the wheel and really enjoyed driving this weekend,“ explained Bucky Lasek.

The Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept debuts in Paris
For those not familiar with the Subaru XT name, the new Subaru XT Line Concept is based on the sporty two door Subaru coupes that were available from 1985 to 1991. The angular little Subaru XT (known as the Alcyone XT in many markets) of the 1980s-90s offered all wheel drive and a turbocharged so while the drivetrain was vastly different from what is available in the new Subaru BRZ – the fact that the XT was the last compact 2-door sports coupe from the Japanese automakers helps to bring some relevance to this new concept car name.
The unique features of the Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept begin on the outside where plenty of carbon fiber has been added with a new rear diffuser, rear spoiler, roofline and mirrors made from the lightweight, high strength material with a “dry finish”, low gloss carbon design. Next, 11 spoke, 18 inch lightweight wheels painted gloss black and fitted with bright red wheel centers sporting the new XT logo allow a great look at the bright red brake calipers under all four wheels. A big set of exhaust tips protruding from the unique rear splitter and the exterior upgrades are capped off with red and carbon fiber XT Line Concept badges on the front fascia and the C pillars.
Inside, the dry carbon fiber look is continued along the top of the gauge cluster and in the door panels while sport seats wearing the XL Line Concept logo and ultra bright red leather really help the interior pop. There is also bright red stitching on the black leather shift boot, the emergency brake handle boot, the leather steering wheel, on the leather door panel portions and on the floor mats.
Unfortunately, this great looking Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept does not receive any reported performance improvements so this concept car is powered by the same naturally aspirated 2.0L Boxer engine that sends 200 horsepower to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. I expect that it is still a blast to drive but it doesn’t pack the turbocharged engine that the performance world has been hoping for.
Interestingly, the Subaru display at the 2011 SEMA Show featured a fully restored Subaru XT and with the introduction of the new BRZ XT Line Concept, could the XT be an upcoming high performance trimline for the BRZ? Many have expected that the automaker will eventually release a higher performance BRZ with the STI trimline designation but the STI models have typically been known for their all wheel drive performance measures. The BRZ was designed specifically to be a rear wheel drive sports coupe so it seems very unlikely that a BRZ STI would introduce all wheel drive to this lightweight coupe. However, many Subbie enthusiasts hope and expect that there will be a turbocharged model coming in the near future – leaving me to wonder if the XT name will be used rather than STI since the BRZ is a rear drive model. This could allow the company to differentiate between their rear wheel and all wheel drive performance models if the RWD models carried the XT designation while all wheel drive models like the Subaru WRX STI would wear the STI logo as a sign of all wheel drive capabilities.

2013 Subaru Forester
Subaru is pleased to announce the release of the 2013 Subaru Forester. While the Forester continues to be available in a wide range of trim levels including the Forester 2.5X, 2.5X Convenience Package (and 2.5X Convenience Package with PZEV option), 2.5X Touring Package, 2.5X Limited Package and the top-of-the-line turbocharged 2.5XT Limited, the 2013 Forester enters the new model year with thoughtful enhancements for greater style, convenience and safety throughout its lineup.
Select New Features
New for 2013, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity is now standard on all models, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. All models also now gain a MediaHub, allowing quick and easy connection to iPod or USB files.
A Compact SUV with Huge Functionality
Outstanding on-road handling and maneuverability have been Forester hallmarks since the model's inception, but the robust body structure, long-travel four-wheel independent suspension, and up to 225 mm (8.9 inches) of ground clearance help make Forester equally adept at negotiating twisty roads and absorbing ruts and bumps. The ride quality is acclaimed as one of the best in the segment.
Framed side windows and large door openings make it easy to get in and out. The rear gate's generous window enables the average-sized driver to see a one-metre (3.2-foot) object or person positioned one metre behind the vehicle. Rear tinted privacy glass is standard. The Forester 2.5X Touring and Limited Package as well as the 2.5XT Limited feature an extra-large sunroof, allowing front and rear passengers a beautiful view from all angles.
All Forester models, since the 2012 model year, include a 6-way adjustable front passenger seat, which also offers height adjustment. For backseat passengers, reclining rear seats are standard on 2.5X Touring and Limited Package models as well as on the 2.5XT Limited. The rear seat incorporates a folding centre armrest and Touring and Limited Packages gain a rear seat flip-forward seat cushion table with integrated and illuminated cup holder. Forester models boast more cargo volume and a larger cargo floor than most competitors and its standard 60/40-split rear seatbacks fold to provide a flat cargo floor. With the rear seatbacks raised, the cargo area is large enough to accommodate four golf bags or four large overnight suitcases. The auto-off headlights are a traditional Subaru convenience that can preserve battery life. On models with the 5-speed manual transmission, the Hill Holder System can help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.
Standard towing capacity of 1,087 kg (2,400 lbs.) with a maximum 91 kg (240 lbs.) tongue weight is higher than many competitors and is substantial enough to pull a trailer with two personal watercraft.
Raised-profile roof rails are standard across the range and Subaru dealers offer a full range of recreational accessories and carriers, including a trailer hitch, bicycle carrier, and roof-top cargo boxes for transporting sports equipment and other cargo.
Frugal, Fun SUBARU BOXER Engine
Forester 2.5X models are powered by the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Electronic Throttle Control and Active Valve Control System. This engine develops 170 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 174 lb.-ft. of torque at just 4100 rpm, while the Forester 2.5XT Limited is equipped with a 2.5-litre turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine that delivers 224 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 226 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm.
A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the Forester 2.5X and 2.5X Touring Package. An electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission (4EAT), optimized to provide improved shifting and to maximize fuel economy, is standard on the 2.5X Convenience Package, 2.5X Limited Package and 2.5XT Limited. The 4-speed automatic transmission features Manual Mode control for manual gear shifting when desired. Manual Mode provides three shifting modes: Normal, Sport, and Manual, each with its own specific shifting and torque converter lock-up maps.
Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle Technology
PZEV is a designation awarded to vehicles that meet strict emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Subaru PZEV vehicles in Canada comply with the CARB Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle tailpipe standard (SULEV) and virtually eliminate fuel-system evaporative emissions. Compared to an average new vehicle, Subaru PZEV vehicles have significantly cleaner exhaust emissions. In certain cases, vehicles meeting PZEV emission standards are even cleaner than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
The Confidence of Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive
Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive is comprised of the SUBARU BOXER engine and a full-time all-wheel-drive system that varies by model and transmission. The aluminum boxer engine and simple, symmetrical drivetrain layout help to lower the centre of gravity, which in turn contributes to handling precision.
The 2013 Forester features two versions of Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive, which make all-wheel-drive traction available all the time, regardless of speed, gear, or conditions. Models equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission use a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that distributes power 50/50 for well-balanced handling at all speeds.
In all Forester models with the automatic transmission, an electronically controlled Multi-plate Transfer clutch system actively manages power distribution based on acceleration, deceleration, and available traction. This system distributes power 60/40 front/rear under normal conditions, but balances power 50/50 for maximum grip when slippage is detected. Control logic in this AWD system enhances stability by monitoring individual wheel speeds and reacting more quickly to wheel slippage. The control logic also helps to improve tight corner braking, contributing to more neutral handling response (reducing understeer and oversteer).
Independent Suspension for Flatter Cornering
The Subaru Forester was among the first SUVs to ride on a four-wheel independent suspension, which gives it outstanding ride quality and exceptional handling dynamics.
All Subaru models feature a strut-type front suspension with a wide track and long wheel travel. The double-wishbone rear suspension, also on all models, handles rough roads and sharp corners with both poise and precision - ensuring maximum tire contact, minimum vibration and significantly improved ride quality. Together, these characteristics deliver flatter cornering as well as a quieter, more comfortable ride over a variety of road surfaces. While the strut-type front suspension features L-shaped lower arms with liquid-filled rear bushings and anti-dive geometry, the double-wishbone rear suspension is mounted to a hydro-formed subframe that is isolated from the body structure. This configuration also allows maximum rear cargo room and rear seat room.
Vehicle Dynamics Control
Standard on every Subaru, the Vehicle Dynamics Control system monitors and analyzes if the vehicle is following the driver's intended course via an array of smart sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel adjust automatically to assist in keeping the vehicle on course. A Vehicle Dynamics Control 'off' switch is useful for driving out of slushy roads, deep snow or very loose gravel. The 'off' position deactivates the system's torque-reduction control, while the ABS and traction control remain active.
Forester Exemplifies Subaru's Safety Leadership
Thanks in part to the extensive use of high-tensile steel, the Forester is an IIHS Top Safety Pick for occupant protection. This structural strength also permits relatively thin roof pillars for excellent visibility, helping to reduce the chances of an accident in the first place.
The extensive roster of dynamic safety technology in the 2013 Forester includes standard 4-wheel disc brakes with Subaru's four-wheel, four-channel, four-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) electronic stability system, as well as symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive and Brake Assist. In emergency braking, drivers usually apply less pedal force than needed even if they react quickly. Brake Assist detects how quickly the driver has pressed the pedal, and if pedal velocity exceeds a certain level, Brake Assist immediately applies system hydraulic pressure up to the ABS limit to help increase braking effectiveness.
Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) is also standard. The EBD system automatically adjusts front/rear brake proportioning based on vehicle load and is more effective than conventional brake proportioning valves.
In all Subaru models, the foundation for outstanding occupant protection is the advanced ring-shaped reinforcement frame unibody structure, with a front-end configuration that disperses collision energy in three directions. This design forms a series of rings around the passenger compartment, providing protection in a variety of collision types. High-tension steel side-impact door beams and impact-absorbing foam materials enhance side-impact safety performance.
Standard passive safety technology includes the Subaru advanced frontal air bag system (SRS), driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and standard side curtain air bags. A rollover sensor can deploy the side curtain air bags if it detects a potential vehicle rollover. Active front head restraints help reduce potential whiplash injury in a rear collision, while a collapsible brake pedal and impact-absorbing driver's footrest help reduce lower leg injury in a frontal collision.
