Subaruarticleorange

Subaru of America, Inc. reveals 2013 Subaru WRX and WRX STI Special Editions at the 2013 SEMA Show. The new models are in keeping with a long tradition of customized Subaru SEMA show cars -- and just in time for Halloween. The Special Edition WRX and WRX STI models feature an "Orange and Black" custom paint scheme, with Tangerine Orange paint off-set with jet black custom wheels, black front fender badging and exterior mirrors. The Special Editions cars also receive black exterior graphics.

The Special Edition line-up is limited to just 200 WRX sedans and 100 WRX STI sedans. For a true custom look, the WRX Special Edition features the dark interior trim from the WRX STI, including a black headliner. The Special Edition orange interior is also applied to the stitching on the seats, doors and shift boot, and custom orange trimmed floor mats. The WRX STI also features front fog lamps.

On sale in spring of 2013, the Special Editions spice-up an already potent line up of AWD sports cars. Featuring Subaru BOXER engines, the WRX and WRX STI models develop 265hp and 305hp respectively. Delivering massive bang for the buck, the 2013 WRX Special Edition produces 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm and running through its standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The 2013 WRX STI Special Edition delivers a rally-inspired driving experience with its 305-horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine, six-speed manual transmission and exclusive Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) version of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The WRX STI is also equipped with Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) and a Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, the latter featuring a track performance-optimized mode.

2013 Subaru Outback delivers affordable fun and performance

Subaru

For 2013, Subaru of America has raised the bar even further giving the Outback revised front styling, a new more efficient and powerful engine, a new second generation Lineartronic CVT transmission and a leading edge driver assist system called EyeSight that provides the driver pre-collision braking that is capable of detecting and reacting to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic threats plus lane departure and sway warning along with adaptive cruise control.

We just completed a week with a brand new Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in Venetian Red Pearl with a base MSRP of $29,095 and the Moonroof + Navigation + Eyesight System package for $3,940. With delivery, our 2013 Subaru Outback price was $33,830.

At first glance, we thought this Outback 2.5i Limited was very well equipped. After reviewing the vehicle and its standard plus optional equipment included, we were very much surprised at the value Subaru has included in the price.

After driving this new Outback for around 300 miles around Central Texas, we understand readily the loyalty of Subaru Outback owners through the years and why sales for the Outback were up 39% over 2011 in September with the roll out of the 2013 model with the new EyeSight system.

This very capable 5-passenger crossover utility (CUV) wagon was equipped with the 2.5 liter DOHC 4-cylinder Boxer engine delivering 173 horsepower with 174 lb.-ft. of torque. It was equipped with the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) with a 6-speed manual mode that included steering wheel paddle shifters. The EPA rating for this 4-cylinder is 24/30 mpg city/highway.

The 3.6R Limited model (MSRP $32,095) is equipped with a DOHC 6-cylinder Boxer engine that delivers 256 horsepower delivering 256 horsepower with 247 lb.-ft. of torque. This version is equipped with a standard 5-speed electronic control automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The bigger 6-cylinder EPA rating is 18/25 mpg city/highway.

From our test drive, the performance of the Outback 2.5i Limited exceeded our expectations even with the smaller power plant. Mated to the CVT transmission, this Outback Limited got us easily everywhere we wanted and needed to go without hesitation and for less money at the pump.

This Subaru Outback is smart-sized compared to other 2-row crossover vehicles, featuring a mid-size interior in an easy-to-maneuver and off-road-capable wagon. The Outback provides the crisp car-like handling with the versatility of an SUV. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for many large SUVs and crossovers while maintaining a low step-in height.

Seating is wide and comfortable with more than adequate cockpit space and lots of leg room between the front and second row seating even with the front seats all the way back. Total passenger volume of 105.4 cu. ft. and maximum cargo capacity of 71.3 cu. ft. (with the standard 60/40 split rear seat backs folded) was easily comparable to that of larger, heavier vehicles. The Outback also features a rear cargo area that is deeper and wider than in many SUVs.

The new more comfortable seats were perforated leather trimmed in our Outback and coupled with a new light matte wood grain trim, gave it a sophisticated appearance.

The Outback Limited new Special Appearance Package option provides a new Keyless Access & Start system along with a two-position memory system for the already-standard 10-way power driver’s seat. With the Keyless Access & Start system, the driver, while carrying the remote control in a pocket or purse, can unlock the car by touching the door handle button. The rear gate also has an unlock touch sensor.

Also in the Limited, a new electro-luminescent instrument cluster integrates the 3.5-in. color screen for the multi-information display, which also shows EyeSight functions. Rear A/C outlets have also been added as standard to Limited models, to make the standard 60/40 split-reclining rear seats an even more hospitable place to be.

The standard audio system in the Outback 2.5i models is upgraded for 2013 to include Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and audio streaming, iPod® control capability and a USB port. The system continues with an AM/FM stereo, single disc CD player, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), 3.5mm aux. input jack and 4 speakers.

Our top-level Outback Limited model included the optional new navigation system with premium audio. In addition to all of the features in the harman/kardon Premium Audio Package including a 440-watt high-performance audio amplifier and nine harman/kardon premium speakers with subwoofer. This option includes: touch-screen GPS navigation system with 7.0-inch LCD display; voice activated controls and navigation; XM NavTraffic; Rear Vision Camera, and an SD card slot for convenient navigation map updates.

On the roof, our 2013 Subaru Outback included the new adjustable standard factory-installed foldable roof crossbars roof rack design that allows the rear crossbar to be moved rearward to carry longer items. The distance between the front and rear bars can now be increased from the standard 29.9 inches up to 39.7 inches. This enhancement, made as a direct result of Outback owner feedback, allows greater ease in carrying longer items like kayaks and other outdoor gear on the already easy-to-use roof rack system.

Despite being very off road and cross country capable, this Subaru Outback rides very comfortably and quietly due to numerous enhancements to the suspension system and sound deadening efforts for 2013. The 2.5i Limited rides on 17 inch alloy wheels adding to the stability of the vehicle.

We were very pleasantly surprised to find the New EyeSight Driver-Assist System included in the delivered price for this Outback 2.5i Limited.

The EyeSight driver-assist system, integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. The Subaru EyeSight system uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems. The system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items.

Below relative speeds of approximately 19 mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians or objects in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop.

At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately, to help mitigate collision damage.

The Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane.

Intended for freeway use, Eyesight’s Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fully brake the vehicle to a stop if the system “locks on” to a vehicle ahead. As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy “stop and go” freeway traffic by maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when the vehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn't react within several seconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damage by cutting the throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedal continues to be pushed.

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek compact for adventure

Sub

Subaru has achieved remarkable success in North America over the past two decades by creating variations of its two basic models, the compact Impreza hatchback and the pricier Legacy sedan.

At the heart of all its models are the Boxer 4-cylinder engine and the all-wheel-drive system that defines the brand.

Impreza, introduced in 1992, evolved into the Outback wagon in 1994 and the Forester crossover utility vehicle in 1997. Now, Subaru has a newer version of the Impreza called the XV Crosstrek, a high-riding compact that was originally designed for Europe but caught the eye of American dealers. Subaru calls Crosstrek the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover utility in America, delivering 33 miles per gallon on the highway.

Brochure highlights include standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, high ground clearance, 17-inch alloy wheels and abundant room for passengers and cargo.

Subaru is bringing two versions of the XV Crosstrek to dealers this fall. The Premium trim has a high level of standard features and the Limited adds more luxury and technology. XV Crosstreks are powered by a 148-horsepower 2-liter boxer engine, so-called because its cylinders are horizontally opposed, making it flat like a box. Buyers can opt for five-speed manual transmission or Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.

The review car came with automatic transmission, which shifted without identifiable shift points. However, the engine was a bit noisy on hard acceleration from a dead stop.

The automatic transmission features a six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters. That allows the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. The transmission also allows "second gear" starts to limit wheel spin on slippery surfaces.

Fuel economy figures of 25 city, 33 highway and 28 combined mpg makes Crosstrek among the most fuel-efficient crossovers on the market. All-wheel-drive adds safety to a vehicle but costs a mile or two per gallon in fuel efficiency. Buyers looking for both AWD and fuel efficiency will likely be attracted to the Crosstrek. Think Vermont.

The Crosstrek is an attractive vehicle that will appeal to those who project sporty, outdoor personalities. Black side and wheel-arch cladding, rocker spoiler and roof rails provide contrast to the body color. The higher ride height, body-color roof spoiler and eye-catching 17-inch wheels enhance the car's appeal. Front and rear bumpers and the front grille are unique to the Subaru XV Crosstrek, and dark-tint privacy glass is standard.

Crosstrek's structure features high-strength suspension components that enhance agility, while liquid engine mounts help reduce vibration. The double-wishbone rear suspension features pillow ball bushings for to improve ride comfort, straight-line stability, handling agility and vehicle response.

Both the manual and automatic transmissions include the Subaru Incline Start Assist feature, which will briefly hold the vehicle while the driver pulls away from a stop on a hill.

A standard ECO gauge helps the driver to operate the vehicle as economically as possible. The interior of the Crosstrek feels much roomier than you might guess from the outside. A 103.7-inch wheelbase yields rear seat legroom of 35.4 inches, which is close to the roominess of some midsize cars. With the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded, haulers gain a completely flat load floor with up to 51.9 cubic feet of carrying space. The cargo area has a cover that can be pulled into place or removed, along with a removable waterproof cargo tray, tie-down hooks and grocery bag hooks.

Crosstrek's front seats feature tilt-adjustable head restraints. Large door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and maps. Several compartments around the center console are available for cell phones, MP3 players, sunglasses or other items.

2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0L Sport Limited Long-Term

Subaruarticle

Fresh off the Subie's firewalk through the Arizona desert for baseball's spring training, I took the Sage Green hatchback on a long weekend trip north to the Eastern Sierra mountains of California and the resort town of Mammoth Lakes. Driving up with me were two skiers eager to hit the slopes. With almost no ski experience I was there to breathe the mountain air, drink beer, and watch Kentucky dismantle Louisville in the Final Four. Our trip really got started when we stopped for lunch at In-N-Out Burger in Lancaster as we made our way north to join U.S. 395 in Indian Wells, where we stopped for "supplies" at Indian Wells Brewery Co.

The saying "The journey is more important than the destination" certainly applies to the approximately 160-mile run between Indian Wells and Mammoth Lakes on U.S. 395, aka the Three Flags Highway because it stretches from Mexico to Canada. The road, situated in the Owens Valley, is a chasm with the Eastern Sierra Mountains to the west and the smaller Inyo Mountains to the east. Westward is Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. To the east lies Death Valley. The landscape is beautiful, but also stark and desolate. The Impreza easily hauled its three passengers and our load of supplies while maintaining an unofficial mid-30 m.p.g. range. No struggles to make the climbs or keep up the speed. There were some problems being able to hear the passenger in the back seat, but it wasn't wind-tunnel-level noise and was remedied by the person speaking up, but not yelling.

Four major cities along the route are Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, and Bishop. Lone Pine is home to the stunning Alabama Hills and the portal to hike Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48. Between Lone Pine and Independence, the haunting sight of a reconstructed watchtower on the site of the Manazanar War Relocation Center is powerful reminder of our nation's ignorance and intolerance. The site housed Japanese Americans during World War II and now is maintained and operated by the National Park Service. www.nps.gov/manz/index.htm. Bishop is home to Erick Schat's Bakkery and some of the best butter cookies I've ever had. We stopped here as well for more "supplies."

Upon arrival at the Mammoth Mountain Resort we parked the Subie for the weekend and boarded a Snow Cat that took us to our snow-locked cabin. Saturday skiing was a bust as high wind shut everything down, but luckily the wind brought with it snow. Lots and lots of snow.

Sadly, the Subaru was already parked, so I wasn't able to give its all-wheel-drive a snow test. I sensed disappointment in its car-brain, but we'll get 'em next time. While my friends skied, I drank some beer and Inhaled mountain air while watching the Wildcats crush the Cardinals in a lodge bar where a 10-year old kid refused to give me a high-five. Little jerk. It was a weekend well spent.

Diverging plans meant I had a solo drive home. With the sun melting away into the mountains, the trip was one of the easiest and most beautiful long-distance drives of my life. The comfortable and supportive seats allow me to drive the long distance without my back getting stiff and me having to stop for a stretch. Filling up near Mammoth gave me all the fuel I needed to get home, but I did need to make one stop in Bishop for a re-supply of cookies that I didn't have to share with anyone. Friends are great and all, but cookies are better.

Subaru Legacy X marks its spot

Subaruarticle

Drove a luxury sedan through mud, over rutted tracks and up a very big hill the other day. Didn't touch tarmac once. Didn't stop until I reached the top.

If you're thinking that not many people would want a fully-equipped four-door with off-road capability, you're probably right.

Subaru NZ might agree: it expects to sell only 20 of its new flagship sedan, the Legacy X, each year.

But as company boss Wally Dumper told media at the model's launch: "There's an opportunity there."

We Kiwis love wagons, but in some markets buyers of pseudo-luxury models still feel a load-carrier lacks the dignity and premium look of a conventional three-box sedan.

That thinking led Subaru to create the Legacy X, which is aimed mainly at the American market.

This $67,990 machine comes only with the 3.6-litre boxer-six petrol engine and is fitted with every piece of equipment available from the Japanese maker: leather upholstery, powered/heated front seats, satellite navigation, automatic lights/wipers, windscreen wiper de-icer, a thumping McIntosh 10-speaker sound system and the new, high-tech EyeSight active safety system.

Naturally, the Legacy X is four-wheel drive.

But it also has a 50mm raised ride height and 200mm ground clearance, meaning it can go pretty much anywhere an Outback can.

The model will be of interest to rural businesspeople who want to maintain a premium image, executives with country-based clients and even farmers who might otherwise buy a top-line Australian sedan.

Aside from the Legacy X's practical nature, Dumper also sees it as a "Euro fighter" - an upmarket, all-wheel drive car for buyers who want something a little bit different.

Different it is, although the Legacy X doesn't give too much away in terms of styling.

The raised ride height exacerbates its already "perched" look, but it's balanced by the wider track and flared guards from the Outback - in body colour, of course.

The X heads a revised Legacy/Outback model range.

The 2.5-litre Outbacks have a new boxer engine and Lineartronic (continuously variable) transmission that have further improved fuel economy to 8 litres per 100km.

Despite the major powertrain upgrade, exterior changes are minor.

The 2013 Outback is most easily identified by a new grille shape, although it has also gained an extra 13mm ground clearance - at 213mm, it rides just slightly higher than the Legacy X.

Presdidential cars: Ronald Reagan, Subaru Brat

Subaru

How many American presidents actually test-drove cars? Reagan is famously known as an actor-turned-politician, but in the late 1970s he secretly drove a Subaru Brat test car around his California ranch and sent progress reports to the automaker. It had to be hush-hush because political sentiment of the day toward Japanese carmakers was confrontational to say the least.

Round of 2012 Global RallyCross Championship

Rally

Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team driver Sverre Isachsen powered his 2012 Subaru WRX STI to a season best third Overall at this past weekend’s Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team celebrated the result as proof that recent testing and development have significantly increased the performance and potential of the team’s trio of nearly 600hp Subaru WRX STI Rallycross cars. Isachsen’s teammate, rallycross rookie Bucky Lasek, steered clear of trouble to achieve a career best finish of eighth overall. Team driver Dave Mirra didn’t have lady luck on his side in Vegas, as he collided heavily into the back of a competitor who had suddenly slowed in Mirra’s path due to a mechanical issue . The collision forced Mirra to retire from the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) heat with significant front end damage to his Subaru.

Isachsen qualified sixth overall in one of the most closely contested GRC rounds this year, where the top eight qualifiers were separated by under a half second, with Isachsen just 0.3 seconds off the pole. All three Subaru PUMA RallyCross team cars went head-to-head together with two other competitors in the five-car heat race. Isachsen held an early lead in the heat against his teammates and defending GRC champion Tanner Foust, only to have Foust narrowly pass him coming off the joker lap late in the race. With a second place finish in the heat Isachsen moved straight on to the Final. Lasek would move on to the Final later in the evening with a fourth place finish in the LCQ while Mirra’s collision with a slowing competitor’s car forced him to retire from the LCQ.

Isachsen steered clear of trouble around the chaotic first turn in the ten-car Final and made a late race pass to reach third Overall. “Our goal all season has been to develop the car and reach the podium. This feels so good,” exclaimed Isachsen at the finish celebration. “My Subaru was good all weekend, and my driving too. This is a big confidence boost for the team and now I’m looking forward to the next race outside the Las Vegas Convention Center during the SEMA Show.”
Isachsen’s teammate, skate legend Bucky Lasek was equally thrilled with his own result as he achieved his best finish yet in his burgeoning Rallycross career. Lasek for the first time this season advanced to the Final where he finished eighth overall. “This event was another great leap forward in my rookie year. Getting more seat time in my #81 STI is the key and it has helped me catch up to the development of these cars. I’m now much more comfortable behind the wheel and really enjoyed driving this weekend,“ explained Bucky Lasek.

The Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept debuts in Paris

Subaruxt

For those not familiar with the Subaru XT name, the new Subaru XT Line Concept is based on the sporty two door Subaru coupes that were available from 1985 to 1991. The angular little Subaru XT (known as the Alcyone XT in many markets) of the 1980s-90s offered all wheel drive and a turbocharged so while the drivetrain was vastly different from what is available in the new Subaru BRZ – the fact that the XT was the last compact 2-door sports coupe from the Japanese automakers helps to bring some relevance to this new concept car name.

The unique features of the Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept begin on the outside where plenty of carbon fiber has been added with a new rear diffuser, rear spoiler, roofline and mirrors made from the lightweight, high strength material with a “dry finish”, low gloss carbon design. Next, 11 spoke, 18 inch lightweight wheels painted gloss black and fitted with bright red wheel centers sporting the new XT logo allow a great look at the bright red brake calipers under all four wheels. A big set of exhaust tips protruding from the unique rear splitter and the exterior upgrades are capped off with red and carbon fiber XT Line Concept badges on the front fascia and the C pillars.

Inside, the dry carbon fiber look is continued along the top of the gauge cluster and in the door panels while sport seats wearing the XL Line Concept logo and ultra bright red leather really help the interior pop. There is also bright red stitching on the black leather shift boot, the emergency brake handle boot, the leather steering wheel, on the leather door panel portions and on the floor mats.

Unfortunately, this great looking Subaru BRZ XT Line Concept does not receive any reported performance improvements so this concept car is powered by the same naturally aspirated 2.0L Boxer engine that sends 200 horsepower to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. I expect that it is still a blast to drive but it doesn’t pack the turbocharged engine that the performance world has been hoping for.

Interestingly, the Subaru display at the 2011 SEMA Show featured a fully restored Subaru XT and with the introduction of the new BRZ XT Line Concept, could the XT be an upcoming high performance trimline for the BRZ? Many have expected that the automaker will eventually release a higher performance BRZ with the STI trimline designation but the STI models have typically been known for their all wheel drive performance measures. The BRZ was designed specifically to be a rear wheel drive sports coupe so it seems very unlikely that a BRZ STI would introduce all wheel drive to this lightweight coupe. However, many Subbie enthusiasts hope and expect that there will be a turbocharged model coming in the near future – leaving me to wonder if the XT name will be used rather than STI since the BRZ is a rear drive model. This could allow the company to differentiate between their rear wheel and all wheel drive performance models if the RWD models carried the XT designation while all wheel drive models like the Subaru WRX STI would wear the STI logo as a sign of all wheel drive capabilities.
