Winter Storm Adds Challenges To This Weekend’s Rally in the 100 Acre Wood

100acre_2_mid

Subaru Rally Team USA returns to the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood this weekend with defending Rally America Champion David Higgins at the wheel of his 2013 Subaru WRX STI. The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood represents round two of the 2013 Rally America National Championship and is now in its 11th consecutive year set in Missouri’s Ozark foothills. The event’s fast and flowing gravel roads have earned it the reputation as one of the fastest rallies in the USA, but it’s also known for wildly unpredictable weather conditions, which will surely be the storyline this year. A massive winter storm moving through the American Midwest has covered the event’s roads with several inches of ice and snow.

The winter storm will clear the area ahead of the 1:30pm (CST, UTC-6) Friday start time, but many of the roads are expected to stay covered in ice as temperatures will continue to hover near or just above freezing throughout the weekend. The treacherous conditions will mean tire choice, driving skill, and bravery will be the deciding factors on the results sheets for the 63 entered teams.

“The weather will play a big factor here. The roads are now covered with a layer of ice and snow so it’s going to be a huge challenge for everyone,” explained Higgins Thursday evening after completing reconnaissance of the stage roads. “These roads are so fast that as you run them each year you get faster and faster, it’s really about experience here. This will be my third time here and it’s the only event in the Rally America Championship that I have not won. I hope this can be our year but at same time championships are won over the whole year, not at a single event.”

SUBARU DONATES $300,000 TO THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER IN CAMDEN

26_subaru_213_mid

Subaru of America, Inc.announced it is making a $300,000 donation to The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, which recently broke ground in the Cramer Hill section of Camden, N.J. Thomas Doll, Executive Vice President and COO of Subaru of America, announced the news during an event held at Subaru headquarters in Cherry Hill, N.J. Company employees and representatives of The Salvation Army and Food Bank of South Jersey were on hand for the announcement.

The $300,000 donation will fund The Choice Food Pantry within the Kroc Center, which will provide a wide variety of food choices to thousands of area individuals. With a setting similar to a supermarket, the pantry will allow clients to choose nutritionally appropriate food that will appeal to each family member.

“Support of the Choice Food Pantry further demonstrates Subaru of America’s commitment to reducing the hunger issues in our local community,” said Doll. “The Choice Food Pantry will fill a critical need while providing education and choices for the people who need assistance feeding themselves and their children. We are proud to partner with the Camden Kroc Center on this important initiative.”

The naming of the Choice Food Pantry is in keeping with Subaru’s desire to be an active participant in the fight against hunger and supports other corporate-wide hunger initiatives such as the annual Subaru Drive Out Hunger program and regional Share the Love Gardens, in which Subaruemployees grow and donate fresh produce in their communities. These and other food initiatives have donated more than 800,000 pounds – 400 tons – of food over the past five years.

“We are extremely grateful for this generous contribution from Subaru,” said Major Paul Cain, Kroc Center Administrator. “This gift is just one more demonstration of Subaru’s continued efforts in support of the needs of the region.”

Construction on the $90 million Kroc Center began in early December. The 120,000 square-foot facility will create 160 new jobs and is scheduled to open in 2014. The Kroc Center features family and fitness services, education and outreach, an eight-lane competition pool and water park, a chapel, a black box theater and dance studio. It also features indoor and outdoor basketball courts and ball fields.

“Subaru’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of Camden County is evident in its community-centered initiatives. Partnering with the Kroc Center, which will serve as a hub for health and wellness needs, is another way for Subaru to show its dedication to the region,” said Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.

The Kroc Center in Camden is one of 27 community centers in underserved neighborhoods nationwide. In 2004, The Salvation Army USA announced that it would receive nearly $1.6 billion from the estate of Mrs. Joan Kroc. Inspired by a center she created with The Salvation Army in San Diego, her gift would act as a lead grant to construct and partially endow the other centers. Mrs. Kroc wanted each Center to be a “beacon of hope and an agent of change,” providing opportunities for people of all ages to build a better life.

Subaru teases Viziv Concept before Geneva motor show

Subaru revealed its plans for the Geneva motor show on Thursday. The company will bring a Subaru Outback Diesel, an an all-new Forester and the Viziv concept.
The new Outback will use a diesel version of the company's Boxer engine with a continuously variable transmission.

The new Subaru Forester will join the Outback on the stand. We just checked it out last month in Arizona, after it debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The fourth-gen SUV uses either a turbocharged 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT or manual transmission.
The Viziv Concept, Subaru says, represents a direction of new designs and technologies for the company. It also says the Viziv is a concept that embodies the value of “enjoyment and peace of mind.” The name is inspired by the phrase vision for innovation.

We can't see much in the teaser, although we do see a lot more than we saw of the Bentley Flying Spur we talked about earlier this month. We're digging the headlights and aggressive-looking grille. Subaru's current crop is a little on the mundane side, so hopefully they keep the front clip for future products.
